Access for emergency service providers
will be maintained at the Union Road interchange in all directions.

Pavement Reconstruction
Reconstruction of this section of Highway 401 will be completed over two years with the Westbound Lanes (WBL) and Eastbound Lanes (EBL) reconstructed in separate construction seasons. Pavement reconstruction work will be undertaken on the WBLs in Season 1 (2018) and EBLs in Season 2 (2019).

In Season 1, the WBLs will be reconstructed and WBL traffic will be directed across the median to the existing EBLs, where the highway will operate with one lane in each direction. During this time, the north side (WBL side) of the Union Road interchange will not be accessible to WBL traffic. All lanes both EB and WB will be reopened in the winter.

In Season 2 (2019), the EBLs will be reconstructed and EBL traffic will be directed across the median to the newly reconstructed WBLs while reconstruction of the existing EBLs is completed. Traffic will operate with one lane in each direction. During this time, the south side (EBL side) of the Union Road interchange will not be accessible to EBL traffic.

Mill Road Underpass Rehabilitation
Structure repairs will be completed at the Mill Road Underpass in Season 1 (2018). Highway 401 will be closed for one night to remove the existing bridge deck and girders and a second night to install the new bridge girders. During this time, Highway 401 traffic will be directed onto a local roads detour.

The Mill Road underpass will be replaced over a period of approximately three months, during this time Mill Road will be closed at Highway 401.

Union Road Underpass Rehabilitation
Structure repairs will be completed at the Union Road Underpass in Season 2 (2019) in two stages. During each stage, Highway 401 will be closed for one night to remove the existing bridge deck and girders and a second night to install the new ridge girders. During this time, Highway 401 traffic will be directed onto a local roads detour. During the remainder of the repairs Union Road will remain open but reduced to a single lane of alternative traffic controlled by temporary traffic signals.

Schedule
The project is currently in the Detailed Design phase where the construction staging, including temporary traffic signals, signage, and detour routes, is being developed and finalized. Construction is anticipated to start shortly after design completion in Spring/Summer 2018, pending the acquisition of permits and approvals. It is anticipated that construction will occur over two seasons.

Work in 2018 includes the westbound lanes and the Mill Road underpass. Work in 2019 includes the eastbound lanes and the Union Road underpass.
